About Punta Piedra del Mangle Lighthouse
Also known as: Punta Piedra del Mangle (Punta Mangles)
A cylindrical fiberglass tower, 8 meters tall with red and white horizontal bands, stands at Punta Piedra del Mangle. The light emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 16 nautical miles. This facility first became operational in 1930. Its predecessor, an 18-meter square skeletal tower, was overturned by a hurricane in 2008. The current structure, standing at a focal height of 34 meters, was erected after that event. The promontory is located about 30 km northwest of Gibara, Cuba.
Why it matters: The lighthouse warns mariners navigating Cuba's northern shore about the promontory northwest of Gibara. Its modern design reflects a response to the hurricane that destroyed its original tower.
