About Point Pedro Lighthouse
Also known as: Point Pedro (Point Padro, Point Paduru)
Built in 1916, the Point Pedro Lighthouse is a 32-meter tall cylindrical masonry structure, 31 meters above sea level. The tower, painted white, includes a lantern and gallery. It displays a white light with a 5-second interval (Fl W 5s), offering a 15.5 nautical mile range. Located at Sri Lanka's northeastern point, it marks the southern access to the Palk Strait. The site is accessible, but the tower remains closed to visitors. Kankesanturai port is 13.2 kilometers distant.
Why it matters: This lighthouse provides navigation assistance for ships traversing the Palk Strait, a main passage between Sri Lanka and India. Its position on the island's northeast corner serves as a reference point for maritime traffic in the Bay of Bengal.
