About Nagayalanka Lighthouse
Also known as: Nagayalanka (Kistna River)
This cylindrical masonry tower, standing 37 meters tall, is painted with red and white spiral bands. It was first lit in 1972, replacing an earlier light known as Kistna or False Devil Point. The lighthouse is situated on the east side of the Krishna River's mouth, south of Nagayalanka village in India. Its white light emits a single flash every 15 seconds and has a geographic range of 16.2 nautical miles. In November 1977, the station experienced severe flooding due to a tropical cyclone. Access to the lighthouse is exclusively by boat.
Why it matters: This light ensures continuous navigational safety at the mouth of the Krishna River, a significant waterway for local maritime activities. The repurposing of bricks from the former structure for retaining walls showcases a practical approach to coastal infrastructure maintenance.
