About Kaohsiung Lighthouse
The Kaohsiung Lighthouse, also identified as the Cihou Lighthouse, was constructed from brick in 1883. This white, octagonal tower stands 15.2 meters tall, with its light positioned 58 meters above sea level. It emits four white flashes every 30 seconds, visible for a geographic range of 25 nautical miles. Originally built during the Qing dynasty, the structure was later rebuilt between 1916 and 1918 under Japanese rule, incorporating elements of both Western and Japanese architectural styles. It is recognized as a historic site.
Why it matters: Designated a historic building in 1985, this lighthouse overlooks the entrance to the Port of Kaohsiung, playing a role in the port's development since the late 19th century.
