Location & Light Range
About Isla Centinella Lighthouse
Isla Centinella is a cylindrical concrete tower standing 6 meters tall, painted white with a narrow red horizontal band. It is situated on a small island at the southern edge of the Paso Tortuoso. The light has a focal height of 22 meters and emits a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 13.6 nautical miles. The current structure dates from an unknown construction period, but an earlier lightbeacon at this location was photographed in 1916. This operational light serves a remote area near Puerto Natales.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for guiding eastbound ships into the extremely narrow and challenging Paso Tortuoso, marking the start of the passage.
