The Hoek Galibi lighthouse, established in 1871, is a square skeletal concrete tower with red and white horizontal bands. Its most recent iteration stands 60 meters tall, mounted on four concrete piers, with a focal height of 14 meters. The light was first lit in 1871, with the original tower being replaced in 1897. The geographic range of the light is 7 nautical miles. Two white flashes are shown every 18 seconds. The tower has been inactive since 2012, and its current physical presence is uncertain.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marked the west side of the Maroni River entrance, forming the boundary between Suriname and French Guiana.
