Location & Light Range
About Green Point Lighthouse
Green Point Lighthouse, a white square tower with a white cupola and red diagonal stripes, was completed in 1823 and first lit in 1824. Initially, it used Argand lamps fueled by whale oil, with a range of 6 nautical miles. The tower was expanded to its current height of 16 meters in 1865. In 1922, upgrades to 3rd order dioptric flashing lights extended the light's reach to 22 nautical miles, though its current geographic range is 25 nautical miles. The light emits a single white flash every 10 seconds.
Why it matters: This structure is recognized as a provincial heritage site and was the first solid lighthouse built on the South African coast.
