Green Point Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Green Point Lighthouse
First lit in 1824, the Green Point Lighthouse stands 16 meters tall with its focal plane at 19 meters. Originally constructed between 1821 and 1823, it was expanded to its current height in 1865. The lighthouse initially used Argand lamps fueled by whale oil, with a range of 6 nautical miles. By 1922, upgrades introduced dioptric flashing lights, extending the range to 22 nautical miles and establishing its current characteristic of a single white flash every 10 seconds. This structure is located on Mouille Point.
Why it matters: The Green Point Lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa and was the first solid lighthouse structure built on the nation's coast. It is recognized as a provincial heritage site.
