About Foul Point Lighthouse
Also known as: Foul Point (Kevilea, Sampur)
Foul Point Lighthouse, also known as Kevilea or Sampur, is a white cylindrical stone tower built in 1863. Standing 21 meters tall, its focal height is also 21 meters above sea level. The structure features a lantern and gallery and is located approximately 7.2 kilometers from the nearest port of Trincomalee. Following significant damage from a tsunami, the lighthouse underwent restoration between 2018 and 2019. It was officially reactivated in March 2020, resuming its role in guiding maritime traffic. The geographic range of its light is 13.4 nautical miles.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for vessels navigating the southern entrance to Trincomalee Harbor. Its light, which displays three white or red flashes every 15 seconds, specifically directs ships through this approach.
