First lit in 1841, Fort Génois was an 8-meter white tower with an integrated dwelling. From a focal height of 61 meters, it emitted two white flashes every 6 seconds, offering a geographic range of 20.2 nautical miles. Searches in 2005 found no trace of the structure, and local residents had no recollection of its existence. Modern satellite imagery also failed to locate the lighthouse at its listed coordinates. Its disappearance leaves only historical records and a mystery surrounding its fate.
Why it matters: Fort Génois served as a historical navigational aid along the Algerian coast.
