About Devgad Lighthouse
Also known as: Devgad (Davgarh, Devgarh)
This cylindrical masonry tower, standing 11 meters tall, features black and white horizontal bands. Its light emits a white flash every 23 seconds, visible for 17.4 nautical miles. The focal height of the light is 42 meters. Constructed in 1958, it replaced an earlier structure first lit in 1915. The tower, topped with a red lantern dome, is situated on a promontory at the south side of the Devgad harbor entrance, about 80 km north of Vengurla. The site is open to visitors, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for vessels navigating the entrance to Devgad harbor, a significant port on the Indian coast. Its placement within an early 18th-century fortress adds historical context to its modern navigational function.
