About Cần Giờ Lighthouse
Also known as: Cần Giờ (Aval)
Cần Giờ Lighthouse was built in 1864 as a round, cylindrical cast iron tower. The tower stands 22.5 meters tall and is mounted on pilings, with a lantern and gallery positioned on the roof of an octagonal keeper's house. It emits a white flash every 8 seconds, visible for 13.7 nautical miles. This structure guides vessels entering the Sông Sài Gòn channel, near Vung Tau. The lighthouse has been maintained and was later converted to solar power.
Why it matters: This 19th-century pile lighthouse is a rare example of its kind in Asia and is essential for ships navigating the Sông Sài Gòn channel to Hồ Chí Minh City.
