About Chaul Kadu Reefs Lighthouse
A cylindrical masonry tower painted white stands 19 meters tall, with its light positioned 17 meters above sea level. Constructed in 1870, the lighthouse features a gallery and was built to mark the dangerous Chaul Kadu Reefs, located about 10 kilometers southwest of Alibag. The structure is made of masonry and emits a red flash every three seconds. Originally, it included a refuge room for shipwrecked sailors. The lighthouse is situated offshore, approximately 10 kilometers from the nearest port of Dharamtar.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns vessels away from the hazardous Chaul Kadu Reefs. Its construction by the British and the inclusion of a refuge room highlight its historical and humanitarian significance for maritime safety.
