About Cayo Piedras del Sur Lighthouse
A square skeletal tower standing 14 meters tall marks the western entrance to Bahía de Cochinos. The current light, operational since 2018, features a white flash every 10 seconds from a focal height of 15 meters, with a geographic range of 11.9 nautical miles. The original lighthouse was first lit in 1863 but was demolished in the early 1960s. The station is situated on a small, inhabited island approximately 9 miles southwest of Playa Girón.
Why it matters: This light guides vessels approaching the western side of Bahía de Cochinos, a body of water with significant historical context.
