About Cape St. Francis Lighthouse
Also known as: Cape St. Francis (Seal Point)
This 28-meter round brick tower, built in 1878, stands at the end of the R330 highway, 30 kilometers south of Humansdorp in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The structure rises from a one-story keeper's house and includes a lantern and gallery. It emits a single white flash every 5 seconds, with a geographic range of 16.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse retains its original 2nd order Fresnel lens, which is still in use. The operational lighthouse is a staffed station, which is uncommon in contemporary times.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is South Africa's tallest masonry lighthouse and continues to operate with a resident keeper, utilizing its original Fresnel lens.
