Berbice Entrance Range Front Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Berbice Entrance Range Front Lighthouse
This square skeletal tower, standing 13 meters tall, was built in 2011 of wood and first lit the same year. It is mounted on a wood platform supported by wood piles. The tower exhibits a quick white flash. This range front light replaced an earlier, lower structure. Its upgrade was prompted by an increase in bauxite shipments, requiring improved guidance for vessels entering the Berbice estuary. The site is accessible, but the tower itself is closed to visitors.
Why it matters: This range front light is essential for guiding vessels, particularly those carrying bauxite, into the Berbice estuary and the port of New Amsterdam.
