Beirut Lighthouse

🇱🇧LBOperational

Also known as: Beirut (Ra's Bayrut, Beyrouth)

An octagonal tower, 27 meters in height, stands with black and white horizontal bands. This structure, featuring a lantern and a circular observation room, was built in 1957 to replace an earlier lighthouse. It guided vessels approaching the port of Beirut, located 3.6 kilometers away. The lighthouse faced a period of inactivity between 1982 and 1990. Its light was eventually obstructed by a high-rise building, leading to its deactivation in 2003. Following an attack in 2006 that damaged its antenna and top section, repairs were undertaken. The observation structure was removed around 2010 during renovations.

Why it matters: The Chebli family's multi-generational service as keepers highlights a unique local connection to this navigational heritage.
