A fire broke out on the passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa II on August 2, 2026, while the ship was crossing the Java Sea. At least five people died. Forty-one were missing.

The ferry had set out from Surabaya in East Java, headed for Makassar in South Sulawesi. It was carrying 271 people. The fire broke out in the early morning off the coast of Madura Island.

Nearby ships moved in first. Five Indonesian coast guard ships arrived on scene, along with a helicopter. Rescuers brought 225 people to safety.

The search for the remaining 41 continued. What started the fire was not immediately known and was under investigation.
