Boat With 60 Migrants Capsizes off Tobruk, Fifty Dead or Missing

Boat With 60 Migrants Capsizes off Tobruk, Fifty Dead or MissingAI illustration

A boat carrying about 60 migrants went down near Bardaa Island, off Tobruk, on July 15. Eastern Libya's coast guard said at least 50 people are dead or missing. Ten survivors swam to the island.

The boat was heading for European shores. Women and children were among those on board.

Smuggling networks operating out of Libya typically pack migrants into small, unseaworthy boats for the sea crossing. Smugglers usually load Europe-bound migrants onto unsafe boats, with thousands dying on the journey each year, according to the Washington Post.
