The Salvages Lighthouse

Fl White 10s🇨🇦Blanche, CAOperational

The Salvages lighthouse, built in 1965, is a square metal structure standing 12 meters tall. Its focal height reaches 15.5 meters, and it emits a white flash every 10 seconds. The building is white with a red lantern and features a square skeletal tower with a red and white daymark. A fog signal station was established on the island in 1915, but the current lighthouse structure dates to 1965. Though operational until around 1987, the active light was moved to a nearby skeletal tower in 2004. The historic structure remains on an island at the west entrance to Negro Harbour.

Why it matters: The endangered status of this historic structure highlights the ongoing challenge of preserving maritime heritage in remote locations. Its unique architectural design integrates a lantern and gallery directly onto a keeper's house.
