About Sailor's Encampment Range Front Lighthouse
Sailor's Encampment Range Front is a square skeletal tower constructed of steel, standing 20 meters tall. Located in St. Joseph Township, Ontario, it is situated about 75 meters south of its modern counterpart. This structure, likely built in the mid-20th century, served as a range front light, working in conjunction with a rear light to define a specific navigational path. The light is now inactive, and the tower is on private property. Its skeletal form remains visible from the nearby street.
Why it matters: As a former range front light, it was essential for guiding vessels along a defined course by aligning with a rear light. Its presence marks a stage in the development of navigational aids in Canada.
