About Rauðinúpur Lighthouse
This lighthouse, built in 1958, stands on a promontory at the northwestern corner of the Melrakkaslétta peninsula. The cylindrical concrete tower, standing 8 meters tall, is painted yellow and features a red lantern. Its light, situated 63 meters above sea level, emits a white flash in Morse code R every 20 seconds, visible for 20.5 nautical miles. The station was first established in 1929. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the entrance to Öxarfjörður, a fjord important for local fishing and shipping, and its unique Morse code signal serves as an unmistakable identifier for mariners.
