Pointe aux Pins Range Front Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Pointe aux Pins Range Front Lighthouse
This square pyramidal wood tower, standing 8.5 meters tall with a focal height of 9 meters, was first lit in 1903. It is painted white with red trim and features a red vertical stripe on the range line. The lighthouse emits a continuous green light. Its geographic range extends to 10 nautical miles. The tower is located on Pointe Louise, on the west side of Sault Sainte Marie, guiding ships around a sharp bend in the St. Marys River above the Soo Locks.
Why it matters: This range light is indispensable for upbound ships navigating the St. Marys River, guiding them safely around a sharp bend just above the Soo Locks and preventing groundings in this heavily trafficked waterway.
