Point Petre Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Point Petre Lighthouse
A cylindrical concrete tower, standing 19 meters tall, was constructed at Point Petre in 1967, featuring red and white horizontal bands. This modern structure replaced an earlier stone tower that began operation in 1833. The current lighthouse emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 13.5 nautical miles. It rises from a square workroom and features a distinctive round top section that serves as a 'watch room' rather than a traditional lantern housing. The keeper's house at the station was demolished in 2022.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guides vessels navigating the southern end of the Quinte Peninsula in Lake Ontario. Its unique 1967 design with a 'watch room' is architecturally notable, and a preservation campaign was launched after the keeper's house demolition.
