About Miscou Island Lighthouse
This white, octagonal tower stands 83 meters tall, with a focal height of 24.5 meters. First lit in 1856, it emits a white occulting light on a 5-second cycle, providing a geographic range of 12 nautical miles. The lighthouse also operates a RACON on 3 and 10 cm bands. It is situated on the northeastern tip of Miscou Island, marking the entrance to Chaleur Bay. The structure was built by James Murray of Newcastle.
Why it matters: Designated a provincial heritage place, this lighthouse was established to mitigate annual shipwrecks and is recognized as a federal Heritage Building.
