About Lonely Island Lighthouse
On Lonely Island, an octagonal wood tower, 16.5 meters in height, is painted white, with a red lantern. This structure, first illuminated in 1907, was built after a fire destroyed the prior lighthouse in 1906. The light's focal height reaches 59.5 meters, emitting a white flash every 10 seconds. Its illumination covers a geographic range of 20 nautical miles. Located approximately 30 km east of Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, the island itself is an isolated elevated landform. The tower continues to function, though original station buildings have vanished. Public access is prohibited, with helicopter transport being the sole method of reaching the island.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the northwestern Georgian Bay area, an extensive and difficult body of water for ships.
