About Île Richelieu Lighthouse
The Île Richelieu lighthouse, established in 1816, is a 6-meter conical concrete block tower built in 1971. It stands on the north side of a small island near Deschambault, opposite Lotbinière. The original 12-meter octagonal stone tower was demolished in 1971. The island itself has experienced significant erosion, with much of it washing away. The structure is topped by an open lantern-like section. It emits a continuous green light on the northeast side and a continuous yellow light on the southwest side.
Why it matters: This lighthouse provides distinct green and yellow continuous lights to guide upstream and downstream traffic separately on the St. Lawrence River. Its history as one of the oldest light stations on this waterway highlights its enduring significance.
