About Île des Barques Range Front Lighthouse
Established in 1907, the Île des Barques Range Front light is a square concrete pier topped by a square wood tower. Standing 5 meters tall with a focal height of 11.5 meters, it emits a green flashing light on a fixed characteristic. The tower is painted white with a bright orange-red front and a black vertical stripe. It is located on a small island in the Lac St.-Pierre basin, about 10 kilometers northeast of Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel. This range light guides vessels navigating upstream on the St. Lawrence River. The island is open to visitors, but the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This range front light is important for safe navigation in the Lac St.-Pierre basin, guiding upstream traffic along the St. Lawrence River. Its continuous operation since 1907 highlights its long-term significance for shipping in this Canadian waterway.
