About Lamb Island Lighthouse
Lamb Island Lighthouse is a square pyramidal steel skeletal tower built in 1961, standing 12 meters tall. Its light is situated 30 meters above the water, emitting a white flash every 5 seconds with a geographic range of 15.3 nautical miles. The light station was first established in 1877, and the current structure replaced an earlier one. The site, located on a small island off the western entrance to Nipigon Bay, is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed. The original keeper's house and other station buildings are still present.
Why it matters: The lighthouse received Heritage designation in May 2015, recognizing its historical value. It provides guidance for vessels navigating the western entrance to Nipigon Bay.
