About Guysborough Lighthouse
A cylindrical fiberglass tower, standing 9 meters tall, marks the southwest side of the entrance to Guysborough Harbour. Painted white with two narrow red horizontal bands, the current structure dates from 1981. The site has served as a navigational point since 1846, though the original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1904. A subsequent structure built in 1905 was replaced by the present tower. The light was deactivated in 1996 and is now inactive.
Why it matters: The succession of structures at this site, from the original light to the 1981 fiberglass tower, illustrates the evolution of aids to navigation. Though no longer active, it represents a connection to the maritime heritage of the Guysborough Harbour entrance.
