About Corbeil Point Lighthouse
The lighthouse structure at Corbeil Point consists of a square cylindrical wood tower, from which the lantern has been removed, atop a two-story wood keeper's quarters. The original light station began operation in 1873. After the first lighthouse was destroyed by lightning in late 1930, a replacement structure was built in 1931. This light became inactive in 1961. In 1967, the light station property was returned to the Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways. The site is open to the public, but the tower is closed.
Why it matters: The property was designated as the residence of the hereditary chief, underscoring its cultural significance to the Batchewana First Nation.
