About Coppermine Point Lighthouse
This square pyramidal frame tower, standing 9 meters tall, was built in 1910 and first lit that same year. It features a white exterior with red trim, with the lantern and gallery also painted red. Originally situated on a cape northwest of Batchawana Bay, it later moved to Hibbard Bay. Today, the lighthouse stands beside the Trans-Canada Highway (ON 17) north of Sault Sainte Marie. Though it ceased active service in the 1960s, the structure remains on private land and is accessible to the public, despite its deteriorating condition.
Why it matters: Its relocation from its original remote cape to a roadside attraction highlights the challenges in preserving historical structures and serves as a tangible link to the region's maritime past on Lake Superior.
