About Chantry Island Lighthouse
Constructed in 1859, this lighthouse features a 26-meter cylindrical stone tower painted white, topped with a red lantern and gallery. Its focal height reaches 31 meters above Lake Huron. The light emits a white flash every 4 seconds, visible for approximately 15.5 nautical miles. Located on the east side of Chantry Island, about one mile from the Southampton beachfront, it is one of the Imperial Towers. The structure is made of limestone, reflecting its original construction.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's original 2nd order Fresnel lens remains in active use, showcasing historical optical technology. It serves as a key navigational aid for vessels on Lake Huron.
