About Trinity House Lightship 16 Colne Light Lighthouse
This two-masted steel lightship, built in 1954, has a red tower with a lantern and gallery amidships. It was formerly positioned on the South Goodwin station before being decommissioned in 1988. The vessel experienced damage in 1960. It was then sold and repurposed as a training vessel for the Sea Cadets in 1988 and underwent refurbishment in 2002. Currently moored on King Edward Quay at Hythe, near Colchester, it serves the Colne estuary.
Why it matters: Its past service on the South Goodwin station indicates a historically significant navigational role. It now provides maritime training for young people as a Sea Cadet vessel.
