Location & Light Range
About Shag Reef Range Front Lighthouse
This white, round wooden tower stands 10 meters tall and was built in 2018, replacing a 7-meter concrete structure. Located approximately 500 meters south of Lyttelton's inner harbor entrance, it guides vessels on their approach to the port. The light displays a continuous white, red, or green signal depending on the vessel's bearing and also emits a quick-flashing white light. Its focal height is 10 meters, with a geographic range of 10.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse is operated by the Lyttelton Port Corporation.
Why it matters: This range front light is essential for the safe navigation of ships entering Lyttelton, a significant port for New Zealand's South Island, working in conjunction with other aids to precisely guide vessels through the harbor entrance.
