About Baring Head Lighthouse
This concrete lighthouse was first lit in 1935 at Baring Head on New Zealand's North Island East Coast. The tower stands 12 meters tall, with its light situated 87 meters above sea level. It emits a white occulting light, showing for a period of 15 seconds. Originally powered by a diesel generator, it was converted to mains electricity in 1950 and fully automated in 1989. In 2005, the original lens was updated with an LED beacon. The geographic range of the light is 14 nautical miles.
Why it matters: Constructed to serve as the primary approach light for Wellington Harbour, this lighthouse also functions as a coastal light for Cook Strait.
