Also known as: Ákra Taínaro (Cape Tenaro, Cape Matapan)

Built in 1882, the Ákra Taínaro lighthouse is located on the southernmost point of the Greek mainland, Cape Matapan. This active light is housed in a 16-meter-high cylindrical stone tower, reaching a focal height of 41 meters. The tower is colored white with a gray metallic roof and is attached to a 1-story stone keeper's residence. Its light, which is white and flashes twice every 20 seconds, can be seen for 17.2 nautical miles. Located about 10 kilometers south of Vatheia, the lighthouse indicates a major landmass extending into the Mediterranean Sea.

Why it matters: This navigation aid is important for ships traveling past the southernmost part of mainland Greece, Cape Matapan, a significant point for vessels crossing the Mediterranean. The structure, a square cylindrical stone tower joined with a keeper's house, forms a notable architectural feature in an exposed location.
