The Ágios Nikólaos lighthouse is a square stone tower, 8 meters high, constructed in 1831. It is situated on a narrow peninsula that shields the northern side of Vourkarió harbor, Kea's principal port, located on the island's northwest shoreline. The building comprises a lantern and gallery positioned above the tower, which originates from a 1-story stone keeper's dwelling. Its white tower is topped with a green lantern dome. This light produces a white flash at 10-second intervals, discernible up to 15.7 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located next to a chapel honoring Saint Nicholas. Access to the site is permitted, but the tower remains inaccessible.
Why it matters: Erected in 1831, it represented one of the initial lights established by the Greek state following its independence, signifying renewed maritime authority. It functions as a navigation aid for ships approaching Vourkarió, Kea's main harbor.
