This stone lighthouse, built in 1834 near Cassis, France, stands 24 meters tall. It is a cylindrical tower painted white with a single black vertical stripe, topped by a gallery and a mast from which the light is displayed. Though constructed over a century ago, the light remained unlit until 1935. It emits a single white flash every 6 seconds from a focal height of 23 meters. This structure marks the Banc de la Cassidaigne, a shoal located 8 kilometers south of Cassis.
Why it matters: The lighthouse warns vessels away from the Banc de la Cassidaigne shoal, a hazard to navigation in the Mediterranean waters south of Cassis.
