About Yamasedomari Kō South Breakwater Lighthouse
This red, cylindrical concrete lighthouse stands 11 meters tall on the south breakwater of Yamasedomari Kō, a small harbor south of Cape Esan in Hakodate. Its focal height is 12 meters, and it emits an occulting red light that flashes every 4 seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles. The structure, described as a round hourglass-shaped concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, was built of concrete. It is located approximately 3.5 kilometers from Toyoura, the nearest port. The light serves to mark the harbor entrance.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns mariners of the south breakwater's extent, ensuring safe passage for local fishing boats and other small vessels entering the protected waters of the harbor. Its distinctive hourglass shape also makes it a recognizable landmark.
