Yahazu Saki lighthouse, built in 1961, stands on a narrow peninsula at the northern tip of Yakushima. The cylindrical concrete tower, painted white, measures 11 meters in height, with its light positioned 44 meters above sea level. It emits a single white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 17.7 nautical miles. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Issō harbor, guiding vessels along this coastal approach. Visitors can access the site, though the tower itself is closed to the public, offering views of the surrounding ocean.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for vessels entering and departing Issō harbor, particularly fishing boats navigating the narrow approach from the sea. Its position on Yakushima's northernmost point helps mariners identify the harbor entrance and avoid the nearby rocky coastline.
