Toden Fukushima South Breakwater Lighthouse

Iso Green 6s🇯🇵Okuma, JPOperational

Also known as: Toden Fukushima South Breakwater (Nuclear Power Station)

This concrete cylindrical tower, 11 meters tall, was first lit in 2017 and displays an isophase green light every 6 seconds. The structure is round and white, attached to a square, one-story equipment shelter. It is situated at the end of the south breakwater for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, guiding vessels arriving at the facility. The lighthouse was inactive from 2011 to 2017, following the March 2011 tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster at the plant, which led to a 20 km radius evacuation. The light was relit in April 2017.

Why it matters: The deactivation and subsequent reactivation of this lighthouse serve as a tangible marker of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster and the region's recovery, specifically guiding vessels related to the plant.
