About Tōkyō West Passage East Breakwater Lighthouse
A red, cylindrical concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, standing 16 meters tall, was built in 1975. It was situated at the end of a breakwater guarding the east side of the west entrance to Tōkyō harbor. The lighthouse emitted two red flashes every 5 seconds. It served as a navigational aid for over four decades. The structure was deactivated in December 2017 and subsequently removed.
Why it matters: Its removal reflects evolving port infrastructure and navigational technologies at this major maritime gateway.
