About Takekushi Kō South Breakwater Lighthouse
The Takekushi Kō South Breakwater lighthouse was a red, cylindrical fiberglass tower standing 10 meters tall, with its light positioned 7 meters above sea level. This structure marked the extremity of the south breakwater within Takakushi harbor, located in the Hizen district of western Karatsu. It emitted a single white flash every 20 seconds, providing a geographic range of 5 nautical miles. The lighthouse served the waters near Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture. Its operational service ended in 2020 when it was deactivated and subsequently removed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guided vessels safely into Takakushi harbor, marking the south breakwater to prevent groundings and collisions for local fishing fleets and other maritime traffic.
