Squaw Island Lighthouse

About Squaw Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse, built in 1892, stands on Ojibwa Island (formerly Squaw Island) in Lake Michigan, approximately six miles north of Beaver Island. The original dwelling was enlarged in 1894 to accommodate both the head keeper and assistant keeper along with their families. Construction of the tower was finished on September 16, 1892, and the station's head keeper entered it for the first time on October 10, 1892. The waters surrounding the island become shallow, dropping to less than six feet deep even at a distance from the shore. The lighthouse was rendered obsolete by the construction of the Lansing Shoals Light Station offshore in 1928.
Why it matters: The construction of the Lansing Shoals Light Station offshore in 1928 made this light obsolete.
