About Skomvær Lighthouse
Constructed in 1887, Skomvær Lighthouse stands on the highest point of Skomvær, the westernmost island of the Lofoten ridge. The cylindrical stone and cast iron tower measures 32 meters in height, with its light positioned 47 meters above sea level. It emits a white flash every 30 seconds, visible for 18.2 nautical miles. The lighthouse complex includes a keeper's house, generator house, and boat house. Since 2012, the light station has been leased to an artists-in-residence program.
Why it matters: Skomvær Lighthouse is important for guiding maritime traffic around the westernmost reaches of the Lofoten ridge. Its significance is enhanced by the preservation of its entire remote station and its current role as an artists' retreat.
