About Saiki City Lighthouses Lighthouse
This cylindrical stone lighthouse, built in 1904, stands 39 meters tall on an isolated rock within the Bungo Strait, approximately 25 kilometers east northeast of Saiki. Its exterior features distinctive black and white horizontal bands, and it is topped by a lantern and gallery. The structure includes an attached two-story stone keeper's house. The lighthouse was heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently underwent significant repairs. Its light produces a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 19.5 nautical miles. The site and tower are not open to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for navigation through the Bungo Strait, a significant maritime route. The former keeper's station has been preserved as the Bungo Strait Maritime Museum, offering insight into the lighthouse's operational past.
