About Ryōri Kō Outer Breakwater Lighthouse
This red, square lighthouse stands 10 meters tall and was first lit in 2017. Its structure consists of a post centered on a one-story equipment building. The light, red and flashing once every 6 seconds, is situated at the end of the detached east outer breakwater of Ryōri Kō, near the entrance to a narrow inlet. It has a geographic range of 11.3 nautical miles. The original lighthouse at this location was destroyed by the 2011 tsunami. Following its destruction, a temporary buoy served as a navigational aid until the new lighthouse was built in 2017.
Why it matters: The re-establishment of this light after the 2011 tsunami highlights its role in supporting the local fishing industry and the economic recovery of the Ryōri community by ensuring safe passage into the rebuilt harbor.
