Location & Light Range
About Rockland County Lighthouses Lighthouse
This skeletal steel tower, standing 15 meters tall, was built in 1923 on a square concrete base. The tower itself is painted black, contrasting with the white base and central column. The light emits a single white flash every 6 seconds from a focal height of 15 meters, with a geographic range of 11.9 nautical miles. The current structure replaced an earlier sparkplug lighthouse that was removed due to foundation failure. It is situated mid-river in the Town of Clarkstown, guiding vessels through a broad reach of the Hudson River opposite Scarborough.
Why it matters: The light is essential for navigating a wide section of the Hudson River where it emerges from the Catskill Mountains.
