Built in 1973, the Port Cornwallis lighthouse is a 10-meter tall cylindrical masonry tower. It is painted white and stands on the southern tip of Bopung or Ross Island, off the northeast coast of Great Andaman Island. The lighthouse features a square cylindrical masonry tower with a gallery, attached to a single-story keeper's house. Its light emits two white flashes every 20 seconds from a focal height of 41 meters, providing a geographic range of 17.2 nautical miles. The site is accessible by boat, and while the grounds are open to the public, the tower itself is closed to visitors.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for navigating the waters around the southern tip of Bopung or Ross Island, a key point off Great Andaman Island.
